Students and staff celebrate World Book Day

The snow and the floods didn’t affect World Book Day, because EVERY day is World Book Day at St Bede’s Lanchester!

Here at St Bede’s we place great emphasis on reading for pleasure. We recognise that the best way to develop students’ literacy skills, improve vocabulary and promote creative writing, is to encourage them to read.

Here is a flavour of what we do.

Get caught reading!

To celebrate the joys of reading for pleasure, students are encouraged to ‘get caught reading’ in unusual places around school. Names are entered into a draw and the lucky winner receives a book token.

16 classics to read before you are 16

Students have a weekly reading session on their timetables, when they spend time reading for pleasure. Recently, we’ve been focusing on our ‘16 classics to read before you are 16’.

Stop a teacher and ask them about...

We’re encouraging students to ‘stop a teacher and ask them about’ their favourite writer, literary text or character. As well as dressing up on World Book Day, staff wear stickers to prompt these thoughtful conversations about literature.

No pens day!

Yesterday, the English department banned pens! We used literary texts as stimuli for creative tasks designed to enhance students’ speaking, listening and drama skills. Students also enjoyed participating in a range of interactive quizzes and fun activities.
